I don’t really need the ranging for what I use the optic for day to day.

As for the caps, I use a microfiber sock from a pair of Oakley sunglasses to protect the lenses when the monocular is not being used. Whether or not you need the caps is going to be personal preference and being honest about how rough you are with your gear and you are how you are using it.

Also – I see there is a rangefinder model that sounds like it has a mil-dot setup. Anyone used that for practicing ranging? From other reviews it sounds like it would be suboptimal as a dual purpose since the reticle is pretty distracting, but might be worth it for practicing with mils.
